A good business makes a profit. A great business makes a difference.

Great businesses can play a profound role in creating a society where women and children feel safe.

Why get involved?

Businesses who choose to address violence, usually do so simply because it’s the right thing to do. But what affects employees, affects employers — and their bottom line.

The effects of violence don’t stop when the workday starts. Bruises and fractures don’t disappear, vulnerable children stay front of mind, and sleepless nights spill over into distracted days. Legal proceedings and medical appointments demand time and attention. Work clothes or car keys can be hidden, or transport money taken.

Absenteeism, reduced productivity, and workplace accidents are the natural result. And when employees leave — or are forced to quit — there are search, hiring, and retraining costs.

How to get involved

It will take all sectors of society to create the change we need, but, as in so many areas, business can lead the way.

This is recognised in the draft National gender-based violence and femicide strategic plan. The Institute for Strategic Studies further explains how the private sector can help stop gender-based violence.

Every business, big or small, can play a part. Workplace policies can provide practical support, education can change attitudes, and setting an example can change your industry.

To get you started, feelsafe can put you in contact with organisations who offer information, guidance, and workplace training, or who would benefit from your support. Through feelsafe, you’ll get the support you need to help your workers and your community and to encourage other businesses to do the same.
