Our objective
feelsafe is a long-term initiative to change South Africa’s attitude to violence.
It is a movement to make violence unacceptable and to create a society where women and children feel safe – a society where we can all feel safe.
“feelsafe is an outreach movement of individuals and organisations working together to address gender-based violence and violence against children in South Africa.”
How will we do this?
First, we’ll listen.
We know this is an old and evil foe. We claim no quick fixes or superior insights. What we do have are plans, strategies, and ideas – but they need to be refined.
To do that, we’ll consult widely. We’ll be guided by those who’ve worked in the field for years, those who’ve studied it, and, most importantly, those who’ve been affected by violence. We’ll put into action a revised, informed plan and seek support and involvement from as wide a section of society as possible.
We will not intrude in the space of the many respected organisations in the field. We won’t be duplicating their projects, or competing for funding. Our role is different.
We’re here to support and to bring together. To enable connection and collaboration and to amplify the voices of the multitude of South Africans who are saying ‘enough’.
We’re here to help change our country’s conversations and expectations about violence – so we can hold ourselves and each other to higher standard.
Even if it seems impossible.
Because this kind of change always does – until it is done. Until we look back and think it was inevitable.
